Since September, Twitter has been enforcing a compulsory 'wrapping' of all URLs—even ones than have already been shortened using other URL shorteners such as bit.ly—in its own t.co service. t.co adds no useful functionality in most cases, simply adding an extra layer to the process of opening the link. Twitter itself displays the actual URL, rather than the t.co one, in users' web profiles, and developers have the option, via the API, to choose to do the same.
I resisted t.co up to the end when it was made compulsory, and resent the fact that Twitter links on my own site now display t.co, while they show the custom bit.ly URL in all the rest of my web presence.
Is there any way that Twitter Tools could be made to display the long URL—or, perhaps, either t.co or the original URL depending on user preference?
