How do I customize the title and sidebar in a theme using a Carrington framework?
1. I would like to use a graphic as a title in the header, how can I do that?
2. How do I choose what is shown in the sidebar?

Hello Susan
Most comfortable and secure way is to go the child theme procedure
If you don't know how to.. just ask
But in your child you can have a custom header (where the title is) and sidebar

I don't know how to, so I'm asking.
I have a child folder, I've added a style.css file to it, and I've set my Wordpress installation to use the new '-mod' theme.
Say I want to change header/headers-default.php to eliminate 'Categories' (as discussed elsewhere on this site). If I make the change to a copy of headers-default.php in my child folder tree, nothing happens.
What am I missing?
Thanks.
