Database web service and plugin
One of the main goals of the GIANT List is to use it as a canonical celebrity database for GIANT and its other network blogs (much like CrunchBase is for the TechCrunch network). We built a web service (server) to provide a list of all available celebrities and their respective URLs to a plugin install on each blog (client) that would then filter on the blog's content and replace exact matches of celebrity names with links to their profiles on GIANT List.Black Planet SSO integration
The Black Planet network is an already-established social network and authentication method for many visitors and readers. In order to comment on the celebrity profiles, we simply integrated single-sign-on so that comments on GIANT List profiles are tied to existing Black Planet user accounts.Fresh content for all
In addition to parsing the main GIANT feed on the homepage, editors have the ability to define a custom feed for each celebrity. This way each celebrity profile contains recent, relevant content pertaining to that individual.Database of celebrities
GIANT has a wealth of knowledge about celebrities and so each page uses structured post meta to store that information. Everything from the celebrity's image, to gallery links, to interesting dates are collected and then displayed on the profile pages. The GIANT List has lists
One of the most interesting aspects of the site is the various lists. Users can browse hand-picked lists of celebrities from rappers to politicians. Using the tags taxonomy, it also allows for some fun, ad-hoc lists such as 'Eye-Candy' and 'D-List' celebrities. The height of popularity
We integrated our Popularity Contest plugin to help expose the most popular profiles across the GIANT list. Additionally, using a custom list, we've allowed for easy management of the editorially-controlled A-List.Designs and concept by Rocket Fuel
