The What and Why of Metacognition

Metacognition is the thinking about one’s own thinking and can be a powerful tool when integrated into team dynamics.  It can significantly enhance collaboration and problem-solving.  For example, teams can use metacognitive prompting during the preparation stage to promote team planning, and during the execution stage to build team knowledge. Metacognitive prompting has 5 stages: Comprehensive Clarification, Preliminary Judgment, Critical Evaluation, Decision Confirmation, & Confidence Assessment.

This is what it would look like for a Marketing team launching a new product:

  1. Comprehension Clarification
    The team holds a meeting to discuss the project objectives. Everyone asks questions to ensure key details are understood before proceeding.
  2. Preliminary Judgment
    The team identifies key tasks and milestones, setting a timeline for critical activities.
  3. Critical Evaluation
    The team critically assesses their initial plan and discusses its feasibility, considering potential challenges.
  4. Decision Confirmation
    After reassessment, the team confirms their final strategy and provides reasoning for their choices.
  5. Confidence Assessment
    The team evaluates their confidence in the plan, acknowledges uncertainties, and prepares contingency plans.

Enhancing Creativity through Metacognitive Skills

Metacognitive skills play a crucial role in enhancing creativity. Studies have shown that individuals with higher metacognitive abilities tend to perform better on creative thinking tasks, particularly in divergent thinking. Metacognitive training programs that teach strategies for avoiding biases can effectively boost creative performance. These programs often incorporate mental imagery techniques, which have been found to stimulate metacognitive thinking and encourage individuals to adjust their learning strategies and think more flexibly.

Scenario: Planning a Major Rebranding Initiative:

  • Expressive Activities
    The CMO organizes a workshop where team members engage in creative activities like drawing or creating mood boards that capture the essence of the new brand identity.   • Illumination
    The team uses mental imagery to illuminate their ideas further. This helps them identify areas where the new brand identity needs to be particularly strong and consistent.
  • Elaboration
    Encouraged to elaborate on their mental images, the team dives deeper into their visualizations. They detail specific elements such as a launch event that includes immersive experiences with the new brand, a comprehensive internal communication plan to align employees with the brand changes, and a series of customer engagement initiatives to introduce the new brand.

By understanding their own thought processes and learning how to control them, individuals can overcome mental barriers, generate more creative/original ideas and approach problems in innovative ways.
