When the pandemic disrupted the Emmy Awards' traditional judging process, the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS) partnered with Crowd Favorite to design a bespoke digital solution. Faced with the challenge of securely handling thousands of entries, including broadcast-quality video, across numerous categories, NATAS required an application capable of managing the entire competition process from entry submission to judging and reporting—all while maintaining the integrity and prestige of the Emmys.
Crowd Favorite developed a custom Laravel application that transformed how NATAS manages its competitions. The platform debuted with the inaugural Children’s and Family Emmys, setting new records with over 4,000 submissions and 3,000 completed entries, and continues to power nearly a dozen competitions annually.

- Simultaneous Competitions: The application supports multiple simultaneous competitions, with independent phases for entry submissions, nominations, judging, and reporting. This capability allows NATAS to run several events at once without operational bottlenecks.
- Templated Competition Structure: By abstracting the concept of Entries and other competition data, the platform ensures consistency and scalability. Each competition can be spun up with a standardized structure, reducing setup time and maintaining uniformity across events.
- Enhanced User Experience with Persistent Data: By retaining user data across competitions, the platform eliminates the need for repeat registrations, creating a seamless experience for entrants and encouraging long-term engagement.
- Custom Video Workflow: A tailored video pipeline optimizes broadcast-quality submissions for judging while preserving original files for production. This innovation streamlined the process for judges while ensuring production teams had access to high-quality assets for event broadcasts.
- Cost Savings and Scalability: Within just two years, the new platform delivered capabilities that would have required six or more years of investment in the previous system. Built to support significantly more features than its predecessor, the custom solution eliminated persistent support issues, integrated with other systems, and provided a foundation to meet the needs of multiple competitions.
Today, NATAS continues to expand its use of this open-source competition and e-commerce platform, demonstrating the longevity and adaptability of the solution Crowd Favorite delivered.
